10 Ways to Stay Motivated in Sales

ONE: List Your Goals.

Start small. What are your goals for today? (For example: Make 10 phone calls; 3 contractors, 3 architects, 3 panel/modular companies and 1 developer.) List who you are going to call/email and what you want to talk about. Making a little list can keep you on track and keep you motivated for the day.

Write your monthly goals. Maybe you want to send out X amount of estimates for that month or hit a financial goal. Then, move to listing your annual goal. Maybe you have a goal of 500 cold calls/ emails and a big financial goal.

TWO: Stop! Collaborate and Listen!

Speak with some of your colleagues or management and get new ideas. I ask some of the other reps ” What do you talk about when you cold call a contractor?” “What do your typical cold emails look like?” “Who do you usually contact at an Architect firm?”… etc. I’ve spent 2 hours in a meeting with all of our reps (there was about 6) just talking strategy. This was SO helpful. Learning about new techniques helped me develop my own and made me more comfortable.

THREE: Vay-Cay.

TAKE A BREAK! Even if it’s just something nice for the weekend. Go do something different, get excited for something. I live in Southeast Kansas, which means I’m about an hour south of Kansas city and a couple hours away from everything else “exciting”. I took a weekend vacation to Tulsa a few months ago and did some wine tasting, went to a brewery, a couple bars, and went to a very nice Italian restaurant. 10/10 recommend that mini vacation. Next weekend is Bentonville, Arkansas. We’ll see how that goes! After that maybe we’ll go explore some Ozark caves. Take a look around where you are and find something interesting, you deserve it!

FOUR: Do Something Different.

I get a little burnt out visiting the same city. Every month. Going to the same places. Usually I will go to Portland then fly to Seattle in the same week. This time, I took a train. I have never been on a train before. So it kept me a little motivated to go back out again. Maybe plan ahead and find something fun you can do when you’re off duty. Last time I went to Seattle I got a ticket for the Space Needle, that was fun! Check out the local attractions and events.

FIVE: Be Someone’s Yoda.

OK, I may have missed the mark with Yoda… but you get the point. Helping others understand what you do and how you do it can be refreshing and a confidence boost. When you’re teaching someone else about the things you do, you’re looking at it all from a different perspective. You may do a little research to help them find their technique, all the while learning more.

SIX: Remember Why.

Why are you doing what you’re doing? Were you ever happy doing it? Why this company? When I’m feeling like what I’m doing “doesn’t matter”, I start to think back to why I’m here. In my case, my parents worked for this company when I was growing up. There are a lot of things here I have to be proud of that they contributed to. Also this company believes in their people and their community. Look at the things they’re doing for you. Be it a health program, free tobacco cessation programs, gym membership contributions, tuition repayment, 401k matching, profit sharing, community donations, etc. Find what it is you like and feel that passion again.

SEVEN: Live Life Outside of Work.

When you go home, turn off the sales stress button. Find a hobby, focus your mind on that. Some people read, write, watch tv, fish, workout, grill, play guitar… Me? I like to make succulent arrangements, sew dog collars & leashes, play with my cricut, play fetch with my dogs…

Here are some hobby ideas. Men click here. Women click here.

EIGHT: Bond With Your Coworkers.

Let’s face it. You have to see these people every day, you might as well be “Friends”. Some of us like to go for drinks on Fridays after we get out early. Last weekend we had a company sponsored tailgating event at Pittsburg State University (we won BTW). It was a great time with barbecue, beer, and free t-shirts! Others meet up once a week and bring their spouses to play board games ( pretty sure they’re gettin’ down to some DND ).

NINE: Training & Speakers

It is a VERY good idea to stay up to date on the industry trends and stay sharp on your knowledge. Maybe look for a few small training sessions regarding sales and the industry that you work in. A few that I am doing are: Consultative Sales, Office 365 and Microsoft Teams, Hurricane & Blast requirements in construction, and customer reaction training.

I’m looking into watching more Key Note speakers. I have seen Janine Driver for body language and Tiffani Bova from Salesforce. I highly recommend both. If you have any suggestions, leave a comment!

TEN: Join an Organization.

I started to feel unmotivated when I moved to the town where I work. This is a new place, it’s hard to make new friends my age here, and there’s nothing to do ( so it feels ). So, I joined a group called YPL. This is the Youth Professionals League. This year it’s really small, but I hope to become a key member of this organization and become more involved. Staying busy keeps me motivated. This group hold a “brews and brushes” event where we paint and drink beer. Honestly, a group of people that drink beer is PRECISELY where I need to be.

Thanks for reading and I hope you get the motivation you need to keep selling!

My First Blog Post:

Hi Y’all. I’m Ellie, I’m from Kansas, and I have two massive dogs. I’ve been in sales for the last 3 years after moving on from a 2 year IT job. I graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BBA in Marketing and Management.

I created this blog in hopes of sharing some of my experiences as a millennial in business. Here I will talk about how I plan my business trips, cold email/calling tips, favorite places to stay, books, speakers, and other businessy things.

Travel Points and Rewards tips: How to Earn the Most Rewards Points

Warning: Do not plan on traveling during the COVID-19 outbreak! (Although… I have been tempted to buy cheap flights to Hawaii….)

If you travel often, especially for work, you have no idea how many points you may be missing out on! When I found out about all these hacks to get extra points, I LOST MY MIND! My best friend and I went to Vegas last year for FREE! It’s just crazy. Trust me guys, this is almost effortless and insanely worth it. I may add some more ideas to this post as I mature in my career.

National Rental Car: Redeem your points for “Partner Rewards” like Southwest!

IHG (Hotels): Add extra points! You can purchase extra points to tack onto your final price for the room. You pay a little for a good deal on points. When you add those bad boys up at the end of the year, you can cash them out for amazon gift cards, cash, rooms, etc. DEFINITELY sign up for IHG! Not only are you banking on points, but the longer you’re with them, you get room upgrades for freezies.

Southwest Dining & Shopping Points: Dudes. I cannot express how excited I was to know that I can literally earn points just by GETTING DOG TOYS AND TREATS. Hell yea! I’m not even joking. Check this out- just use the same credit you use on southwest for your purchases and you automatically get points from it. Same with restaurants. Click Here to get started.

Here are some stores that are eligible for points that I have used (Faves are in caps because I’m excited): Academy Sports and Outdoors, BARKBOX, Best Buy, Birchbox, Cabela’s, Canon, CHEWY, Costco, E.L.F COSMETICS, Eye Buy Direct, Forever 21, Freshly, H&M, MAC Cosmetics, PETCO, Shutterfly, Steve Madden, Tarte Costmetics, Turbo Tax, and Urban Decay.

Planning + Time Blocking

Hey Y’all, it’s been a minute! Today I’m going to show you how I plan my day/ week in a way that I can maximize my time and meet goals. I get overwhelmed super easy, so this is a “life hack” to staying on track.

What is time blocking?

Ah yis. Time blocking is when you plan your day more in-depth. Some may plan by the hour, every 30 minutes, or more vague like morning, afternoon, and evening. Usually each topic or item is color coded.

How do you time block?

I like to print my time blocking sheet for the week and physically fill it out using colored pens/ flairs. Other methods would be filling out your planner (if it has that kind of space), excel, or just your Microsoft outlook calendar. It could be very helpful if your email and calendar are synced between your desktop and your cell phone so that you’re always on schedule.

Free template below:

This is kind of what mine looks like: (Slightly cringe-worthy and obviously a work in progress…)

So, yep! That’s pretty much it. Everyone stay inside, stay on task, and let’s pull through this COVID-19 nightmare!

10 Things to do in Northwest Arkansas

I took a weekend trip to Bentonville, Arkansas. Though I only spent about 2 days there, I found plenty of things to do.

ONE. Crystal Bridges in Bentonville. You could spend hours at the crystal bridges. The admissions is free and the whole place is extremely well kept. Stop by the cafe in the main building.

TWO. Black Apple Crossing Cidery in Springdale. This place was so much fun.. delicious ciders and good entertainment. This Saturday was comedy night and the material was fantastic. Also, there were tons of little metal puzzles everywhere. I love puzzles!

THREE. Botanical Gardens in Fayetteville. Beautiful, creative, and fun! $7 entry, totally worth it. This place was HUGE and we got to be in a room full of butterflies.

FOUR. Tontitown Winery in Tontitown. We didn’t go in, but Saturday they had live music. We sat in the parking lot and it seemed like a really great environment. Live music and an outdoor bar. Bring your lawn chair and relax!

FIVE. Sassafras Springs Vineyard in Springdale. My mom and I did some tasting here and the Rosa Di Rosa was sooo delicious. We bought 2 bottles. Price wasn’t bad and you get to leave with complimentary wine glasses!

SIX. Leaf Tea House in Fayetteville. So… there were a million options and it was hard to choose! I ended up getting a honeydew boba tea and my mom got an iced caramel macchiato.

SEVEN. The Pinnacle Hills Promenade Mall in Rogers. This was such a nice mall to visit. More like an outdoor plaza. Surprisingly organized. One section was mostly women’s clothing, there was a children’s row, restaurant row…etc. Loved it. Got two SUPER cute t-shirts from Girlie Girl.

EIGHT. The Pedaler’s Pub in Bentonville. This pub serves great food, great services, PET FRIENDLY on the patio, and introduces you to local brews and ciders. The pizza is wood fired and you get to watch them make it!

NINE. The Bentonville Square. Lucky for us there was an event Saturday morning where crafters, farmers, and food trucks set up all around the square and we got to look at all the unique and local talent. The waterfall in the center of the square is very pretty also.

TEN. Bike Rack Brewery in Bentonville. We didn’t have time to stop by here, but we did try the Golden Ale at the Pub. This was a delicious and light wheat beer.

Video Conferencing With Potential Clients

This week I reached out to a potential client to see if we could meet some time. They are located in Portland, and of course I am in the Midwest. They requested I show up to one of their meetings that they held Monday at 7:30am. I could not fly to Portland due to a scheduling conflict. So, I recommended we meet through video chat.

The easiest way to video chat, form my experience, is using Microsoft Teams. I simply sent them an invite through outlook, with the location being Microsoft Teams. When they joined, I was able to share my screen which showed my presentation. People from other locations were able to listen in by calling the conference number that is given along with the video link, I LOVE this method.

I personally have a Surface Pro, so some of the other perks of this was I was able to take my Surface out to our facility and show our products on the floor. It was basically like they were here!

August NW Trip Review

The place:

Portland Airbnb on foodie row. Try the Viet-Cajun restaurant down the road. Brewery next door!

The Coffee:

I looooove going to Dutch Bros every time I’m in Oregon. I got the Carberator, next time I’ll try Billy Jean!

The FOOD:

Tapalaya in Portland. I actually got the Jambalaya and it was delicious. I also got the “hurricane”, delicious (and Boozy).

All You Need To Know About Planning A Trip

How I plan:

Microsoft Teams. In Microsoft teams my company has a team specifically for the inside/ direct sales representatives. In that team, I have my own tab. In here, I like to list each day of my trip and the location. Under each date are my plans and goals for the day. On the right of everything is a “target” list. In the target list are customers I would like to see while I am there and have spare time. This is what that looks like:

I like to use a traditional planner. At a Glance is my favorite so far. I prefer hardback since I travel with it quite a bit, it won’t get torn up. I’m also interested in digital planning. See the video below.

How I get there:

FLIGHT: Typically, I like to fly Southwest. It is easiest for me to book my flights directly through Southwest’s Website rather through third parties. If for any reason you prefer or are required to purchase flights through a third party, I would use Kayak. After my flight is booked I like to put the flight time and reservation number in my teams document. This is a good idea so everyone has tabs on you in case of emergencies, or even in case you lost your flight information you can refer back to this. (Teams is available as an app on your phone, life saver!)

Don’t be late! I always get the early bird check in with my ticket. It’s like 20 extra doll hairs. This is strictly because I’m absolutely terrible at checking in on time the day before and end up getting on last… and let’s be honest. No one wants a middle seat.

**PRO TIP**: So many people have LOST THEIR ID while traveling.

  1. CLEAR – Uses an eye or finger scan to verify your identity in lieu of an ID
  2. Take a photo of your ID and passport on your phone and/or print copies to take with you.

TRAIN: This week I’m taking a train from Portland to Seattle. Surprisingly, this was the most effective in cost and time. I’m taking Amtrak . This train ride is about 3 1/2 hours and like 30 bucks. The drive alone is the exact same amount of time +/- restroom breaks. Also, the price of the rental and gas would add up to way more, so train it is!

RENTAL CAR: There are several different rental companies you can go through. My company uses Enterprise/National. Tips below.

  • Emerald Checkout, phone app necessary. (Much faster and much more convenient)
  • Prepaid gas (honestly, sometimes it’s cheaper and you don’t have to worry about filling up before you drop off)
  • Check with your company to see if they cover the young renters fee (under age 25)
  • Track your points for FREE rentals!

Where I stay:

Airbnb: I prefer to get the whole place to myself for safety and convenience. I chose this option to stay low in cost, hotels can add up QUICK. There are places that are selected for business, so be sure to select that option when searching.

Hotels: Most of the time, I do stay in a hotel conveniently located closest to my target customers. I always book through Hotels.com . This is the best way because I pay with a borrowed company credit card, this way the hotel will not require you to show that credit card at check in. Also, I get tons of points here that get me FREE hotel stays all the time!

What I do:

Fun/ Food/ Photos… After the work day, I like to spend a little time exploring my territory. Not being from the area, I need help finding out where to go. As far as good food, I like to use Yelp. If you want fun stuff to do and see I like to check out Airbnb Experiences. Otherwise, I literally just google it. Comment your next location and we can explore the opportunity!

Tune in next week for this weeks review.

Best Book in Sales and Business

Books:

Growth IQ: Tiffani Bova

You Say More Than You Think: Janine Driver

I had the opportunity to see Tiffani Bova speak at the 2019 BNSF conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

Amazing speaker, great book, and bonus points for the pictures and diagrams!

My signed copy:

Janine Driver is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite speakers. She is truly the body language expert. I was able to see her at a glass conference in
Seattle in 2018. 100% recommend seeing her and reading her work!

Crushing It!: Gary Vaynerchuk

I have not read this one, but I do know a bit about Gary Vee. I listen to his podcasts all the time. A couple interesting facts, he was born in the Soviet Union, grew his parents wine business from $3M to $60M in just FIVE YEARS, has a net worth of about $50M, and is basically a bad ass. I intend to read this soon.
